Welcome back to the IoT series of posts. Today I will talk about Internet of Things Automotive Industry and how things are going for cars of the future.
We already talked about Internet of Things in our past article, and how it intends to connect everything anytime. Now it is time to start with real life scenarios and use cases for Internet of Things Automotive Industry.
In reality you see on the news that lost or stolen vehicles are being recovered everyday thanks to some magic trick that showed the owners or the authorities the exact location of the car. But how does this happen.
Well it is not magic, but the work of many engineers, designers, technology architects and others alike.
They have built year after year the foundations for these connected systems that we use today.
Basically put in simple words in the case of the connected car for location reporting purposes:
- You fit the car with (in case of an older car) or build it straight from the fabric with special equipment that can find its exact location with an error margin ranging from few centimeters to a few meters.
Although you will find multiple location targeted systems like GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo or other, the most widely used is GPS (we will explain these systems in later posts). - You fit the car with or build it straight from the fabric with special communication equipment that can transmit this exact location to a centralized infrastructure.
Usually this transmission is done via mobile networks like 2G/3G/4G, Satellite two way communication or other ring fenced systems (we will explain these systems in later posts). - In the center we have applications and infrastructures which can handle this location data.
You put it on a map and show either the owner or other interested parties the exact location.
All this in real time.
You will find it very useful and benefits of it are ripped everyday. But Internet of Things Automotive Industry is much more.
You already put somehow a remote transmission device onto your vehicle, which can handle two way communication. You already connected it to a centralized service which can handle this communication.
So why not use it for other things too.
You will turn on/off your car remotely on a predefined hour, or just because you want to find it warm or fresh when you get in. Check, it can be done.
You will see what speed you son or daughter drives when they are left alone or after a party. Check, it can be done.
You will alert your mechanic of any issues automatically from the car, just because you don’t know anything of car diagnostic. Check, it can be done.
You will inform the emergency services in case of any accident or other issues in real time. Check, it can be done.
Internet of Things Automotive Industry already does this.
What the cars of the future can do, is only limited by our imagination.
Hope you enjoyed this post.
Looking forward to seeing you back soon.
